NEWS FROM VIENNA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

The U.N. is also called Vienna International Center. It was built in 1973 for 4500 members. The Austrian government leases the building to the United Nations for ONE Schilling a year. In the V.I.C. many groups have offices. They are the UNOV (United Nations Office of Vienna) , the UNDCP (International Drug Control Program) , the OLA (Office of Legal Affairs) , the UNSCEAR (United Nations Scientific Commitee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation) , the UNHCR (United Nations High Comissioner for Refugees), the ILO (International Labour Organisations), the UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisations) , the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency), and the IAEA. (International Atomic Energy Agency) .

The Viennese palace of Schonbrunn was the summer residence of the Hapsburg family, including the famous Empress Maria Theresa. Schonbrunn was destroyed by the Turks in 1683. Napoleon finished Schonbrunn in 1804. The name Schonbrunn comes from Schoner Brunnen, or Beautiful Spring. Inside the palace there is the splendor of many wonderful rooms. One of these rooms is occupied by the exhibition of coaches, used by the members of the Hapsburg family. Included for the children are small coaches driven by sheep. Schonbrunn today includes a zoo, and a palmhouse which is the largest hot house in Europe. The palace itself contains more than 1,400 rooms.

The Hofburg was the home of the Emperor, Franz Joseph, and his wife, Elizabeth of Austria.The oldest part of the Hofburg is the Schweizerhof. It was built in the early 13th Century. It is Gothic in origin. Today, the President of Austria, Thomas Klestil has an office in the Hofburg. The Spanish Riding School is right next to the Hofburg. Because of the beautiful horses, it is a big tourist attraction in Vienna.

On Friday the 27th of November, 1992 at 1:27 a.m a fire was reported in the Hofburg. As the fire engines arrived, the Hofburg, including the Spanish Riding School evacuated their prized possessions. The horses were saved but it was too late to save the roof, and the Reduten Salle. The Hofburg is now being rebuilt from the fire damage
